Ancient Romans were notorious for festivals and held them for almost every occasion, both national and religious. This tradition continues today with an amplitude of events to choose from all year round that include a wide variety of entertainment for all tastes.

JANUARY
New Year's Day
Bring the children to Piazza del Popolo for an annual block party a variety of activities to start out the New year with a smile. clowns and characters on stilts, papier-mâché masks, fire-eaters, super heroes and more!

Blessing Of The Animals
Animal lovers make sure to take the whole family to Piazza Vittorio for the Blessing of the Animals, an annual event in Rome, and most cities in Italy, where domestic animals receive a blessing.

FEBRUARY
Rome Independent Film Festival
The Independent Film Festival is Rome's foremost cinema event, showcasing more than 40 artists from over 20 countries. Screenings are held in theaters at the Ripa Hotel, Cinema Pasquino, and Cinema Roma. Enjoy the show!

MARCH
Euro chocolate
Chocolate lovers come early and take your place on the stairs of the Trinita dei Monti staircase for an exhibition of a cascade of 3,000 chocolate eggs which takes place at this annual Chocolate festival with more than 500 stands participating.beware of flying eggs!

Rome Marathon
The attractions of the Rome Marathon are many.the race itself stretches around some of the most famous attractions of the eternal city and includes a wealth of other activities which include concerts and other cultural events, that take place around the city at the same time.

APRIL
Rome's Good Friday Procession
A Catholic tradition and religious event, this procession invites all to participate in the Via Crucis (Station of the Cross) starting at the Colosseum and finishing at Mount Palatino, with the re-enactment of the 14 stations of the cross from the death of Jesus and the route which carried him to the placement of His body in the tomb.

Painters in Via Margutta (also in November)
Have a look. Each year 100 artists are selected from a number of applicants, to display and sell their creations along Via Margutta, an area long known for its resident painters.

MAY
May Day Musical
Celebrate the arrival of warm weather in Piazza San Giovanni with a world class music festival on May 1st.

Tennis Masters Series
Lover of Tennis? Take a seat at the Foro Italico tennis park for the Rome Tennis Masters Series where over 100 players from all over the world compete for top prizes.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
This enjoyable fund-raising mini-marathon in Rome seeks to raise awareness of breast cancer starts abd finishes at the Stadio delle Terme di Caracalla where participants walk/jog/run among some of the monuments of this ancient and beautiful city.
For the less athletically inclined, the event offers an optional two-kilometre scenic walk through Rome.
Profits from the race go to cancer research.

JUNE (sometimes in May)
Dolce Vita Jazz Festival
Ah, the sweet life of jazz. Some 60 jazz artists gather to play their music at Rome's Palma Club and the Auditorium Park of Music.

Like looking at photographs? During the month of June this events displays works of contemporary photography throughout the city. Come and have a look!

JULY
Fashion Show at Trinità dei Monti
If you're lucky you'll get an exclusive invitation, otherwise take a spot among the public with standing room only at the annual high fashion show, on the stairway of Trinità dei Monti near the Spanish steps, where a preview of the latest and upcoming fall fashion worn by top models is sure to leave you breathless.

Castel Sant'Angelo Book Fair
Becoming more popular every year, this annual book festival held in Castel Sant Angelo gardens during the entire month of July, is attended by well-known Italian publishers, writers, and specialty bookshops, and offers story telling for children, workshops, games, concerts, and more!

Festa de' Noantri
One of the oldest celebrations in Rome, this festival is a huge block party in the Roman quarters Trastevere, taking place in the second part of the month on the first Saturday following the Festa of the Madonna del Carmelo, where stands appear on every corner selling everything from food to antiques.

SUMMERTIME LONG EVENTS

JUNE/JULY/AUGUST
Festival of Latin-American Music & Culture
Held near the Hippodrome, this Latin- American cultural festival invites some of the greatest musicians and singers from Latin America to perform , as well as other artists who add their own color to the festivities with alternative music. Food and drink is also available at the numerous stands that surround the area.

Nights of Cinema in Piazza Vittorio
Come and enjoy a box office hit amongst the ruins of Rome on a summer evening in Piazza Vittorio, home to the famous Roman market of the same name, when, from June through August 2 films a night are shown. After the movie, visit the stalls for a refreshment and a selection of a variety of Italian and Middle Eastern delicacies.

Jazz and image Summer Jazz Festival
Every summer, from June through July, near the Colosseum at Villa Celimontana, the jazz festival 'Jazz and Image', takes place to harmonize the sounds of traditional and modern music. A variety of well-known music artists are invited to participate where jazz-pop, gospel, blues, and jazz fill the air. Other theme related exhibitions are also present.

New Opera Festival of Rome
This festival, first held in 1994, takes places in the courtyard of the basilica of San Clemente at the Colosseum.
A summer evening, with the sunset as your backdrop, while enjoying the sounds of classical music from July through August. Performance include works in collaboration with music academies of international fame.

Rome meets the world
All summer long from June through August, artists and groups from all nations perform, making this one of the hottest events on the world music scene. The event started in 1993, and takes place in Rome's most beautiful park along the water, with the objective of promoting a message of tolerance, and harmonious living amongst nations, regardless of ethnicity, religion or culture.

Gay Village
Whether you're gay, straight, young or old, from late June through August, visit the Testaccio area of Rome and find pop concerts, discos, comedy, theater, dining and more in an area designed to re-create a village with the aim of tolerance among different groups. Coma and visit just for fun!

SEPTEMBER
International Urban Theatre Festival
Enjoy free admission to this annual festival whose objective is to bring back some of the excitement of drama and theatre lost in a modern Rome.
Performances are scheduled in various parts of the city all under open air for a breath of real Roman atmosphere.

Notte Bianca (All night long)
Stay up all night long and enjoy various events including music, dance, and theater as well as shops and restaurants open all night long for this annual event that takes place every September.

Roma Europa Festival
IN September find an extravaganza of theater, music and dance events throughout the city for fall vacation fun.

OCTOBER
Great Autumn Antique Market
The largest antique fair in the region, this annual market is held at the Autodrome di Vallelunga, approx. 18 kilometers from Rome. Find special period pieces and other Roman memorabilia both old and new.

Rome Jazz Festival
International jazz artists get together at the Parco della Musica, music park, during October and some of November for great music performances.
