Music in Rome:
:: SILVER HOTELS COLLECTION · MUSIC IN ROME · NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SAINT CECILIA ::
Founded in 1585, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia is the oldest musical academy in the world. For centuries, it attracted the attention of the popes, ensuring its prominence in Rome with regard to cultural events. Today, the Accademia proposes seasonal events performed by some of the most celebrated contemporary artists and orchestras in the world. Currently, the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia is led by award-winning conductor, Myung-Whun Chung. The Orchestra's new home - the state-of-the-art Parco della Musica - adds a whole new facet to the experience. Designed by Renzo Piano, Parco della Musica is made up of 3 separate venues, an outdoor amphitheatre [at which a summer festival season is held], and the ruins of an ancient villa [discovered only after ground was broken for the new concert hall]. For music lovers spending time in Rome, this will be a valuable addition to their stay.
This is one of the most important Musical Institutions. It has a permanent Concert Season and a wide variety of concerts ranging beyond classical music standards.
Bruno Cagli, the artistic director, hosts not only conductors and soloists of international fame, but also artists of contemporary music such as James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Paolo Conte. As well as the many concerts, the Academy also holds a Symphony and Chamber Music season, the latter with recitals held every Friday. For the last few years during the winter, there has also been a festival dedicated to music for children.
The Association of the Friends of Saint Cecilia organise monthly meetings where famous music experts present the season's artists.
Of the larger classical music companies, one principal concert series is organized year-round by the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. In summer the Accademia moves into one of the most spectacular and enchanting outdoor stages in the world, the ancient Terme di Caracalla (Via delle Terme di Caracalla 52, Aventino).
